About

Mustafa Mohamad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary and leads the Predictive & Intelligent Systems Lab.

His research lies at the intersection of applied mathematics, nonlinear dynamics, and scientific machine learning. He develops mathematical and computational methods for uncertainty quantification, statistical inference, data assimilation, and experimental design, with particular emphasis on predicting and mitigating extreme events in complex physical systems.

His work spans combustion and energy systems, turbulent transport, environmental and geophysical modelling, and decision-making in high-dimensional systems. He also contributes to scientific open-source software.

Mohamad received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Computation and his SM in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, and his BS in Engineering Mechanics, with a minor in Mathematics, from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Before joining the University of Calgary, he was a postdoctoral associate at NYU’s Courant Institute and a research scientist at Numerica Corporation.
